The ISA Economy and Society Research Committee (ISA RC02)

Pre-Congress Early Career Sociologist Workshop

June 24, 2023

University of Melbourne

The full-day workshop will take place at the University of Melbourne, Australia, on June 24, 2023, the day before the opening of the XX ISA World Congress of Sociology (June 25 – July 1, 2023).

The goal for the workshop is to invite like-minded economic sociology PhD students and postdocs across different regions to present their latest research on the sociology of economic activities (broadly defined). Participants can present their on-going research as a research paper that they plan to publish later as a research article or a chapter in a book/dissertation. The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to receive feedback from their peers and senior colleagues.

The other purpose of the workshop is to create a supportive and durable international network among early career economic sociologists and dialogue with scholars of different generations and orientations, as well as an introduction to ISA RC02 and ISA. The workshop will conclude with a publication seminar, including meeting with an editor of a sociology journal.

How to apply

Doctoral students and postdocs are encouraged to apply. You may use the paper that you will present at the World Congress, or another paper, so long as it is within the area of economy and society (https://www.rc02.org/).

Application requirements

  1. A 500-word abstract in English that summarizes the research paper you plan to present at the workshop.

  2. A short biography including name, affiliations, stage of your career or PhD year, and your research interests (max 200 words).

Please send your application in Word format to: RC02workshop2023@gmail.com

The deadline for applications is March 17, 2023 (24:00 GMT), and successful applicants will be notified by March 25, 2023 (24:00 GMT).

All selected participants will be required to submit a full research paper (no more than 8,000 words) in Word format by June 5, 2023. This is essential to make sure that participants get the most out of this workshop and facilitate the discussion. Papers will be circulated in advance among workshop participants.
