Book Launch: Anthropology and Tax. Ethnographies of Fiscal Relations (CUP 2024)

The editors of the book Anthropology and Tax: Ethnographies of Fiscal Relations, Johanna Mugler (Universität Bern, Switzerland), Miranda Sheild Johansson (University College London), and Robin Smith (Copenhagen Business School), in conversation will be economic anthropologist Janet Roitman (RMIT University Melbourne), will host a book launch on  Tuesday, June 3 · 10am - 12pm CEST.

From the perspective of individual taxpayers to international tax norm negotiators, the anthropologists in this collection explore how taxes shape our world. A first of its kind, it  presents an anthropological discussion about tax rooted in ethnographic work. By forwarding multiple perspectives from around the world about fiscal systems and how they are experienced and constituted, Anthropology and Tax reconceptualises tax in society. In doing so, this volume makes an incisive intervention in what might be one of the most important debates of our time – that of fiscal sociality.

The event is open to all academics, students, and anyone interested in learning more about the anthropological dimensions of taxation. We look forward to seeing you online and contemplating together what a tax is, what is taxable, and what do taxes do?
