The Department of Sociology, University of St. Gallen, is seeking applications for its Swiss National Science Foundation–funded project ‘Trading Conditions on Marketplaces’. The start date is 01.10.2025 (fixed-term until 30.06.2026), with an expected workload of 50–70%. The location of the job would be St. Gallen.
In everyday language, we speak of markets and marketplaces, which are two arenas of trade. Marketplaces have been central places of trade for millennia. In the past, they were located in the heart of cities and were not only the scene of economic transactions, but also meeting points for social life, politics, and exchange. Today, trade has changed significantly: many transactions no longer take place in physical locations, but online.
This project investigates how trade functions in marketplaces – both analog and online. Even though modern markets and online commerce have seemingly replaced the classic marketplace, it is assumed that a historical line exists between traditional marketplaces and today's digital marketplaces.
