Call for Abstracts: "Capitalism and the Moral Economy" part of the Cultural Analysis of the Economy ISA Forum Pre-conference, deadline: 5 January 2020

This is the announcement to call for abstracts for a session in the Pre-conference (July 13, 2020) on “Cultural Analysis of the Economy” prior to the 4th ISA Forum 2020, in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Session title: Capitalism and the Moral Economy: A Neo-Polanyian Perspective

Globalization and neoliberalism have led to the excessive expansion of market relations for past decades. Consequently, interdependent and cooperative relationships have been all the more on the decline. However, if only market relations cannot consist of societal relations as Karl Polanyi has ever indicated, the double movement is supposed to emerge itself to restrain the excessive prevalence of market relations. So what kind of shapes will the double movement take or what kind of relationships will it build? Furthermore, where will the double movement emerge in capitalism, market, enterprises, or communities? In addition, given the tremendous flow of immigrant workers from the Global South, who can be more intimate to reciprocal relations, can such a flow of immigrants affect the expansion of the moral economy in advanced societies?

If the double movement can recover more reciprocal and redistributive relationships, the moral economy, which can consist of these relationships, will also expand widely. In a wider sense, the moral economy can be characterized by relatively benign class relations, in which exploitation can be to some extent restrained on the basis of interdependent norms. This session addresses such a double movement in globalized capitalism and examines the possibility of expansion of the moral economy in capitalism in the era of globalization.

This session welcomes various types of papers including theoretical consideration on the relationships between the double movement and the moral economy, and case studies of the moral economy in capitalism.

Proposals to this section should include the title of the presentation, an abstract with 300 words in English or Spanish, four keywords and name, institutional affiliation and e-mail addresses of all authors. The deadline for applications is January 5, 2020. Please, send your proposals to Noboyuki Yamada (jogoaya@ruby.plala.or.jp ). We will be able to select four presentations and two distributed papers.

As this pre-conference is not part of the official program of the 4th ISA Forum 2020, participants are not expected to register to this pre-conference. To participate in the ISA Forum itself, registration is necessary.
