Cultural Analysis of the Economy
Pre-conference of the RC02 (Economy and Society)
Prior to the 4
th ISA Forum 2020, Porto Alegre, Brazil
July 13, 2020
The RC02 (Economy and Society) will organize a pre-conference prior to the 4th ISA Forum on the “Cultural Analysis of the Economy”. This one-day conference on July 13, 2020 features Philippe Steiner (Université de Paris, Sorbonne) and Frederick Wherry (Princeton University) as two keynote speakers.
We would like to invite interested researchers on the relation between culture and economy to present their research in our section:
The economy of the arts: markets for objects, labor for artists
In this section, we encourage to strengthen the debates between economic sociology and sociology of the arts concerning the economy of the arts. Recent developments in both sociological fields reveal that research results overlap to a great extent, although researchers are not engaged in a continuous dialog. In order to foster exchange between scholars in both special sociologies, we propose this joint session. We build upon advances on economic sociology related to analyses of art markets that supported the development of alternative theories of price (Velthuis 2004) and the differentiation between standard and status markets (Aspers 2009), as well as on sociology of the arts, connected to how arts practices anticipate economic organizational principles (Venäläinen 2018) and how artists play a central role in defining the value of their work (Gerber/Childress 2017). We propose to discuss the relationship between the market for art objects or artistic work at large (including paintings, music, films, theater, literature, etc.) and the labor markets for artists (spanning from precarious employment, freelance work, to the entrepreneurial self). Papers concerning evaluation practices, market regulation and cultural policy, as well as transnational aspects of the entanglements of economy and the arts are welcome.
Proposals to this section should include the title of the presentation, an abstract with 300 words in English or Spanish, four keywords and name, institutional affiliation and e-mail addresses of all authors. The deadline for applications is January 5, 2020. Please, send your proposals to Glaucia Peres da Silva (Glaucia.peres@uni-due.de) and Konstantin Hondros (Konstantin.hondros@uni-due.de). We will be able to select four presentations and two distributed papers. The applicants will receive notification regarding the acceptance of their paper by January 10, 2020.
As this pre-conference is not part of the official program of the 4th ISA Forum 2020, participants are not expected to register to this pre-conference. To participate in the ISA Forum itself, registration is necessary.
